Happy Thursday! For those that look forward to their weekends, you’re almost there. I’m unfortunately one day closer to a LONG work weekend. I leave tomorrow for Virginia to set up a wedding we are catering for down at an amazing venue called Highholdborne Farm. I have never been to Virginia and I am so excited to travel down there.
As I mentioned in my previous post, the majority of last week consisted of Kevin and his team prepping for this past weekends weddings. We had 3 events in total. One tapas event on Friday evening and two weddings on Saturday. Needless to say, we were pretty burnt out after catering and cooking/serving food for over 500 people so we decided that we needed to take both Sunday and Monday to unwind. I shared our Sunday festivities in my last post along with my fabulous watermelon flats on the blog and we now move into Mondays festivities!
Kevin and I are avid explorers of NYC and typically try to go into the city at least once every 3 months or so. We only live an hour 1/2 away from NY so it isn’t a trek to get there, but our work and family life is so busy it can be hard to find the time or save the money. When we go down we typically stay in the Lower East Side. It’s a gritty yet trendy neighborhood in the city full of art, young adults, and fun little shops, galleries, and restaurants to venture into. We have an affinity for this particular neighborhood because it appeals to our personal esthetic. We just vibe really well with it.
A view into the LES.
There are beautiful murals on the buildings from talented artists. Even something as simple a trash can have been made into a work of art below. I love it.
When we visit it is usually a spontaneous trip because we use our Hotel Tonight app. If you haven’t heard of Hotel Tonight you need to download this app to your phone asap. The Hotel Tonight App is a free smartphone and tablet app that lets you find last minute discounted hotel rooms up to 7 days in advance. We typically wait about a day or 2 in advance to look for boutique hotels to stay that have been either cancelled or just have not been booked for the evening. The closer you are to your date of stay the better it is for your wallet. We have had a very positive experience with Hotel Tonight and have stayed at some pretty amazing hotels at great rates using the application such as The Ganesvoort, Hotel on Rivington, and the Nomo Soho.
We stayed at Hotel Indigo on Ludlow St. back in April and didn’t have the greatest experience there unfortunately. There was a bit of a mix-up with beds in our room and there were no accommodations at the time. We were finally offered an additional room at 2 am. It was kind of mess. We work in the service industry so we didn’t make a huge deal out of it. We know how things can be at times. Guest Services was extremely apologetic and offered us a free room voucher to use for our next stay so we were very grateful for their hospitality. We decided to finally make use on that offer on Monday and we were given the go ahead. We were upgraded to a Deluxe King Suite and we were super stoked about it. We get to the hotel to check in at 11 am and we are greeted by the Manager on duty and she is EXTREMELY servicing and really nice. She then hits us with it….if we wait until 3 pm to check in she will upgrade us to their only penthouse suite in the hotel. “Ummmm Yeah!”. So we checked in our bags at the front desk and made our way to our favorite restaurant for lunch.
Our absolute FAVORITE restaurant when we come to NYC is Claudette. A Provencal Tunisian inspired French restaurant located at the heart of Greenwich Village on 5th Avenue within steps of Washington Square Park. It serves fresh cuisine from all over the world. The food boasts Mediterranean flavor and is a delight on your taste buds using all sorts of unique spices and flavors. Whenever we come here we cannot stop raving and haven’t found another restaurant in the city that we enjoy as much as this one. The staff is super friendly and they always remember us by name.
I chose a Spring Vegetable Cavatelli as my entree. The Cavatelli is house-made with a green peppercorn cream sauce, green peas, favas and Uni on top. I had no idea what Uni was until my husband advised. I was a little hesitant to try it until he told me it works wonders for female fertility. Uni is the Japanese word for Sea Urchin. Uni looks like a hedgehog (a sea hedgehog) and it is specifically a sea urchins gonads. Yum 🙂 It tastes like the Ocean and doesn’t have a fishy taste. I had a few bites of it but had to take a moment to process what I was eating. I’m not going to lie; I was a bit grossed out. I have a thing with texture. However, it gave the meal additional flavor and if it improves my chances of getting preggers. I’ll try it. 🙂
This was obviously our day off so why not have a cocktail during lunch? I chose to have a Garrigue which has gin, absinthe, lemon, rosemary, thyme, and egg white. It was so good. It had a hint of licorice flavor to it due to the absinthe. Very strong though! One was enough.
My husband went with a Hake Sandwich and we had to have the Pommes Frites because we are obsessed with the Paprika Aioli it comes with. It is to die for. I don’t think I would ever be able to live without fries…
Had to take a few pictures of the inside. Below is the bar. The bartender was also our server and extremely friendly and outgoing. A real pleasure.
How Beautiful is the dining area? It has this bookish charm to it. We chose to sit outside since it was nice out. I had to take a pic of the inside. We usually sit in this area when we come in for dinner.
After we were done with lunch we decided to kill some time doing what I LOVE doing most….. Vintage shopping! I googled some nearby thrift and vintage stores and there was one right around the corner called Monk Vintage.
This vintage shop had some pretty amazing designer brands… at some pretty steep price points. I expected it. I found a pair of really cute pink sunglasses, a Free People tunic/dress, and these really cute edge-y Zara Booties. My purchase was only $60.00. Not bad. Husband of course waited at the nearby bar so I had to make it quick because we had to get back to the hotel to check in.
After Monk Vintage we took a cab back to our hotel to check out this “Penthouse”. Unfortunately the room was STILL not ready so they gave us pool passes and free cocktails and we hung out on the rooftop to go swimming.
Already wearing my cute Pink Sunnies purchased from Monk Vintage. My Beach romper was a thrifting find for $9.95 at my favorite local consignment shop The Attic. My suit is a Target find from this season.
Kevin was the only guest taking a dip in the pool.
We were advised that our room was ready and off we go…. and there were NO words to even describe this place. First of all it was a Duplex Penthouse Suite on both the 25th and 26th floor with 2 full bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and 2 sprawling terraces on both floors with skyline views of the whole entire city.
Master Bed on the top floor.
Lounge Area Downstairs.
Kitchen and Dining Area Downstairs.
World Trade Center
My favorite artists on the walls.
I obviously had to take a photo opp! These views were giving me life….
These Daisy Shorts were a find in New Hope the day prior at this store called Thirteen Vintage. They are 36Point5 brand and only sold wholesale into retailers. Nordstrom is known for carrying this brand. They were the last pair and a size too big.. nothing a belt couldn’t fix. 😉 My top is a Free People find at Attic Clothes in Bethlehem PA. They have an online store as well. I will link it below.
I have some friends that still live and work in NYC after I left. So I always make it a point to let them know when I’m back in town. Obviously when you get hooked up with a penthouse suite you have to call whoever is around to come out and play!
We were obviously having way too much fun jumping on the bed!
We got dressed and ready for dinner. It took a while for me to leave this terrace… I was feeling like Carrie Bradshaw and LOVING my life.
This dress is an Ark n co also purchased at Thirteen Vintage. That Cinderella blue and the billowy sleeves pulled at my heart-strings and the dress had to be mine. Amazon carries this brand as well as Lulu’s and many other online retailers. It was pretty sheer so I threw some denim shorts underneath.
We did not feel like going too far because there was no cooler place to be than the penthouse so we went to a local restaurant literally across the street from our hotel called The Dirty French. A gorgeous French Bistro with phenomenal food. My hangar steak was to die for….
It was a little too dim for pics so I had to pull this from their website just for you to get a visualization.
As I was searching for the bathroom I caught a glimpse of the patio… The vines…. So beautiful. Again, it was a little dark so this pic is also from the website but that’s exactly what it looked like.
And this I took …. Our bartender was really friendly and gave us each complimentary Cynar. An Italian liquor made from herbs and plants primarily Artichoke. The alcohol content was 16.5% eeek!
After that the rest was history. We went back to our hotel room and just listened to music, drank a few more cocktails, and enjoyed the rest of our evening.
We even came back to a really sweet note, bottle of wine, and chocolates from the concierge! Hotel Indigo really redeemed themselves and we cannot wait to go back!
I will never tire of these city lights…. until next time New York…
